Abstract


It has been a history of more than 100 years since the foundation of children education facilities, these facilities are called kindergarten now. Before Friedrich Froebel named an educational institution at Blankenburg as "kindergarten" in 1840, the children education facilities had been emerged in Western Europe from late 18th century to the early 19th century. The beginning of British infant school is also the beginning of world infant school. The first infant school of the world was set up for the children from 1 to 6 years old, and affiliated to Institute for the Formation of Character, the institute was established by Robert Owen at New Lanark in 1816.1n 1820,under the influence of Owen, Samuel Wilderspin not only set up the first infant school in London, but also actively engaged in promotion and popularization of infant school. After the foundation of London Infant School Association, other infant school association also successively established. By the promote of its supporters, infant school gradually developed into a nationwide movement.This dissertation follows the research principles of education discipline, attempts to have a systematic understanding of Britain’s modern infants schools movement through existing historical materials. In the introduction, this dissertation firstly probes the important significance of infant school movement in British, then to expatiates the related concept in the dissertation, and the domestic and foreign relevant researches of this thesis are analyzed and summarized, finally puts forward for the relevant research ideas and methods. It is divided into five parts:The first part introduces the background of modern British infant school movement. With the impulse of the first industrial revolution, the existing child-care facilities already cannot satisfy the needs of development, the education theory of infant had been well prepared for the generation and development of infant school. The second and the third part respectively introduces the infant school established by the modern British infant school movement advocates and promoter——Owen and Samuel Wilderspin. It involved the reason of establishing Infant School and the education theory of the infant school, at last made historical evaluation about them. The fourth part reviews the British infant school movement overall and the final decline process. At last, on the analysis of the successful experience of infant school movement in British puts forward some thoughts and suggestions on the foundation of today’s infant school and early childhood education in our country.
