Abstract


Newspaper supplements have been in the shadow of hard news for a long time. However, they are blooming in recent years, especially the book review supplements. During this period of press transformation, these supplements are given new opportunities, as well as new challenges, such as bringing the qualities of news to supplements, strengthening press management with supplements and carrying out the cultural function of newspaper supplements. Searching for the way to supplements’revival needs to broaden horizons and learn from the successful paradigms overseas. As one of the most influential book review supplements in the world, The New York Times Book Review is worth local newspaper’s drawing lessons from.In this background, taking Receptional Aesthetic and linguistics as theoretical tools, this dissertation analyzes the whole contents of 2009 The New York Times Book Review, and concludes its successful management as follows:1. the process of choosing books holds the principle of "readers first" firmly; 2. its texts’"advisory structure" and "horizon of expectation" shows Book Review’s great literariness; 3. the power of Best Sellers List is from not only its independent procedures, but also its efforts of serving readers; 4. the diversity of interactive mechanism plays an important role in attracting readers; 5. its great success also attributes to Book Review’s continuous emphasis on the qualities of news.Referring to Book Review’s successful paradigms, the author provides some advices on the construction of China’s book review supplements:1. give more focuses on book review supplements, and balance the relationship between the qualities of literature and news; 2. establish independent book review operation mechanism, and make bold changes; 3. apply "Content is King" as principle, and take "reader" into account when creating book reviews; 4. stick to differentiation strategy, and develop some unique style of the supplements; 5. set up more interactive mechanism so as to produce new reading experience.
