Abstract


In the international shipping industry , seafarers importance of communicative competence in English language is self-evident . International Maritime Organization (IMO) has developed STCW 78/95 Convention explicitly requires the driver to have a certain ship was English language communication skills. Therefore , cultivating strong English communication skills of highly qualified crew assignment is an important task for various maritime institutions . In the English language , the modal verb is an important component of its frequency of occurrence than the verb to be much higher . However , modal verbs polysemy and its acceptation duplication features make English a difficult learning process . The grammar schools in their description of the meaning and grammatical categories are also different. Will is a modal verb used in high frequency word , its meaning can be up to a dozen . In this study, a contextual navigation spoken English study in which English modal verbs will of modal meanings , combined with the theoretical analysis of communicative competence in maritime spoken English will be how to express communicative significance , and trying to find will in Maritime English oral teaching and everyday spoken English teaching materials used in the context of two different frequencies , modal sense whether there are differences . Study found that in sailing spoken English textbooks , according to the frequency of use will Modality arranged in order from largest to smallest are: will, must , reservations, calling someone to do something , statements, expectations . Among them, the expression \From the perspective of communicative meaning , \normal working state of necessity ; \And in everyday spoken English textbooks , will common sense is to express the speaker's wishes and speculation about something .
