Abstract
Nowadays, with the advance of globalization, increasing exchanges and collaboration among countries have further led intercultural communication to various sectors of society. This in turn casts a laborious assignment for foreign language teachers to cultivate talents with intercultural communicative competence. The purpose of the paper is to introduce a new teaching approach to raise the consciousness of intercultural communication among middle-school students in oral English class and further improve their intercultural communicative competence.Detailed information has been acquired by the author using experiment and investigation. The purpose of the experiment is to test whether or not in an oral English class we can adopt a cultural introductory innovative approach in accordance with their psychological characteristics to nurture students’intercultural communication consciousness and enhance their competence. The subjects of the experiment are the students in two classes who have just entered Grade 8. One is the experimental class, the other the contrastive. The instruments of the experiment are e communicative competence tests and interview. The experiment is conducted as follows:pre-test done at the beginning of the first semester, on communicative competence; post-test done at the end of it. We also had a random selection of 10 students for interview from the two classes to verify our hypothesis that we can improve students’intercultural communicative competence and their English proficiency by applying this approach to the oral English teaching. This thesis designs a teaching approach to the oral English to cultivate middle school students’consciousness of intercultural communication and improve their intercultural communication competence. Based on the theories, this paper purposefully adopts intercultural teaching in oral English class. The subjects involved in our experiment are the middle school students. This approach lays stress on the systemic study of language with culture, gives a detailed introduction of how to cultivate students’consciousness of intercultural communication in order to improve their competence in oral English class. The procedure of the approach is as follows: First of all, we lead the class in by the introduction of the culture-loaded episodes of movies, flashes or pictures. The students are left to discover the cultural differences themselves by having group discussion, in which they will make their own discovery on a long-term basis. Then, we will try to summarize cultural and linguistic knowledge. Finally, the students put in use what they have learnt about the intercultural communication. The result of this study shows that the new approach can help improve junior middle school students’intercultural communicative competence. It gives us the implication that oral English class should stress the cultivation of students’ consciousness of intercultural communication and aim to enhance their intercultural communication competence. In the end, the author makes some suggestions for the improvement of oral English teaching class.
