Abstract

In this dissertation, morphological on both surface and section, mechanical properties and three dimensional reconstruction of elytra from Cybister tripunctatus were investigated.Regarding morphological structure, observation indicates that the elytra had a non-smooth external surface where arrayed many longitudinal furrows, the width of furrow is about 50μm . Many black holes which are twisted by white fibre layers bestrew on elytra’s internal surface, and the same structure is found on the surface without epicuticle. There are cavities and hollow pillars on elytra’s section, those are formed from many fibre layers twisted with each other in parallel way, positive-negative way and helical way. Research shows that black holes and hollow pillars are the same structure. The mechanical properties of elytra without epicuticle and sections of Cybister’s elytra were studied. The hardness and elastic modulus of elytra without epicuticle were obtained from the Nano-indenter tests and the values are 0.065GPa±0.007GPa and 0.704GPa±0.013GPa,which are much smaller than the values of elytra with epicuticle. The mechanical properties of elytra sections follow some rules: on the transverse section, the hardness and elastic modulus in the coupling zone are slightly larger than those in the central and outer zone;and on the longitudeinal section, the hardness and elastic modulus in the central zone are apparently larger than those in the cephalosome and empennage zone.To make three dimensional reconstruction of cavity-pillar structure unit of elytra, using paraffin sections and 3D-DOCTOR software, as well as to observe and analyze the reconstructed structure. To research the distribution of cavities in elytra, gain serial section images after polishing and reconstruct cavity model. Modeling in UG software base on reconstructed models as well as to contrast it with paraffin sections and SEM images, result shows that the structure of elytra is just like the reconstructed model.
