Abstract

Objective To explore the status of communication ability for nurses and its influential factors.Methods The reliability and validity of assessment questionnaire of communication ability for nurses according to literature review and expert consultation was evaluated by homogeneous reliability, heavy measuring reliability, Pearson correlation coefficient, content validity index and exploratory factor analysis. Three hundred nurses selected by cluster sampling method in Mengcheng County of Anhui Province were inquired through applied general information questionnaire and Exxon Personality Questionnaire. SPSS 16.0 software was used to statistically analyze data.Results1. The internal consistency (αcoefficient) of assessment questionnaire of communication ability for nurses was 0.803 (P<0. 001); correlation between each item and total scale was from 0.406 to 0.782 (p <0.01), and those between three subscales factors and the total scale were 0.832 , 0.968 and 0.862, respectively (p<0.01), suggesting that the questionnaire has good reliability and validity.2. The average total scores of communication ability for nurses was 120.31±13.12, and the ratio of factual scores and the highest scores in 74.5% nurses was from 60% to 80%. Dimension of communication values had the lowest score, however, communication behavior had the highest score in all dimensions of communication ability for nurses.3. The total scores of communication ability for nurses years old from 36 to 45 were the highest (123.10±13.01) while those whose years old were littler than 25 were the lowest (118.86±13.01). Those with 11 to 15 years engaged in nursing were the highest (123.99±13.64) , however, those with smaller than 5 years engaged in nursing were the lowest (119.90±13.38).4. The total scores of communication ability in nurse group(119.30±12.31) were decreased compared with those of primary nurse group(120.88±14.83) and nurse-in-charge group(122.81±12.35). Total scores of head nurse and scores of every dimension were markedly higher than those of nurses.5. The total scores of communication ability for nurses in bachelor degree group(127.87±12.55) were increased compared with those in college and technical secondary school groups (P<0.05), and those of technical secondary school group were the lowest(120.37±12.59).6. Scores of nurse L scale (concealment) were lower than the norm (P<0.01). P scale (psychoticism) scores were higher than the norm (P<0.01). Scores of N scale (neuroticism) and E content Table (extraversion) were slightly higher than the norm, however, the difference was not significant(P>0.05). Scores of personality trait for nurse E questionnaire were positively correlated with those of communication ability for nurses (P<0.05). Scores of personality trait for nurse P questionnaire were negatively correlated with the total scores of communication ability for nurses and all the factor scores (P<0.01). Scores of personality trait for nurse N and L questionnaire were negatively related to the total scores of communication ability for nurses and all the factor scores (P<0.01 or 0.05).7. Multiple regression analysis of influential factors of communication ability for nurses: position, education degree, information communication and feedback, communication behavior, neuroticism dimension and extraversion dimension of personality trait could explain changes of communication ability for nurses by 32.7%( t =5.03,P=0.000), 13.3%( t =2.05,P=0.041), 61.3%( t =31.30,P=0.000), 47.3%( t =24.16,P=0.000), ( t =5.30,P=0.000) and 18.5%( t =2.89,P=0.004), respectively.8. Amos18.7 analysis showed that X2 / df of 0.377, RMSEA for 0.083, GFI above 0.90, PGFI, PNFI and PCFI were larger than 0.50, suggesting influence of nurse communication ability to nurse personality characteristics matching correction model structure and theory better fitting degree.Conclusion1. Communication ability for nurses come from Mengcheng County of Anhui Province is in a general level, which is increased when age, years engaging in nursing, title, education degree and position elevate.2. Communication ability for nurses is closely associated with personality trait, and high neuroticism personality status of nurses is inversely link with their communication ability.3. Communication ability for nurses is an important influential factor of personality trait.4. Position, education degree, communication behavior, information communication and feedback, neuroticism dimension and extraversion dimension of personality trait can importantly affect communication ability for nurses.
