Abstract


Grottoes Temple,as a special type of architecture with a long history , inosculatesthe art of the sculpture,painting and architecture.The remains of Grottoes Temple inChina is mostly distributed in the northwest territories. This article attempts to trace thesource of Grottoes Temple’s building types and space in northwest China from theperspective of architecture.This study has four main content areas: First, tracing the source of the GrottoesTemples in the northwest of China and summarizing the specification of Buddhistcultural on space layout of Grottoes Temple; Second, examining the distribution and thecharacteristics of Grottoes Temple in northwest of China; Third, exploring the spaceform and construction techniques of Grottoes Temple in northwest of China; Last, depthanalyzing the architectural features and the unique aesthetic values of Grottoes Templein northwest of China in order to provide some theoretical supports and references tothe research of Grottoes Temple’s conservation and development.The first chapter is an introduction to explain the general situation of this study, itcontains the following contents: the reasons about this study raised, the object andcategory of the study, the research methods of the study, the status and level of thestudy in the world, purpose and significance of the study and the content frame of theresearch.In chapter two, the author dated back to the origin of Grottoes in India, and thendiscussed the evolution and geographical evolution of Grottoes Temple in Chinese history. The author then researched the influences of buddhist culture on Grottoeslayout form the sides of buddhist sects and the buddhist space concept.In chapter three, the author classified of Grottoes on building typology mainlyfrom the sides of geographical distribution type, geological features type, historicalstages type, spatial form type, preservation condition type and function space types.Come to a conclusion of the four areas with different Grottoes Temple characteristics,the five different location land forms, the three major Grottoes opening times and thefour different function types.In the fourth part, the author starts the subject research on building space forms ofGrottoes Temple, through analyzing the external environment space form, the facadeformation shape, the internal order establishing gimmick, the visual design gimmick,the regional environment characteristics, the monomer spatial characteristics and theinternal light and shade technique application, it is concluded that the forming principleof inherent laws of Grottoes Temple.In the last part of this paper, the author summarizes the values of research onGrottoes Temple in architecture field and also analysis the actual projects which he tookpart in.
