Abstract


Objective:(1) To investigate the prevalence of depressive symptom in regular institutions of higher education, and to learn depressive symptom in female college students of different specialties、grades and family incomes; (2) To explore the relationship between depressive experience personalities (dependence and self-criticism) and depressive symptoms in female college students. (3) To test moderator and mediator effects of perceived social support between dependency and self-criticism and depressive symptoms.Methods:Depressive Experiences Questionnaire、Perceived Social Support Scale and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale were used in 594 female college students and 275 male college students. T-test, one-way ANOVA, correlate analyze, and linear regression in the software of SPSS 17.0 were introduced to analyze the prevalence of depression and to learn the relationship between dependency, self-criticism and depressive symptoms in female college students. AMOS 18.0 was used to establish the integrated personality- support-depression model.Results:(1) The level of depressive symptom in female college students is higher than our country’s norm in same age group, there is no significant differences between boys and girls on total score of CES-D, but scores of depressed affect in girls is significant higher than that in boys. (2) Significant correlations were found between dependency, self-criticism and depressive·symptom. The total score & scores of four factors of CES-D in High dependency and high self-criticism group were significant higher than that in low dependency and low self-criticism group. Self-criticism is a significant predictor of depressive symptoms. (3) Perceived social support as a mediator between depressive experiences personality and depressive symptom was found; with the help of Perceived social support, both dependency and self-criticism affect depressive symptom indirectly, but it is self-criticism not dependency affect depressive symptom directly. Conclusions:(1) The level of depressive symptom in female college students is higher than male college students. (2) There are significant correlations between dependency, self-criticism and depressive symptom. But only Self-criticism is a significant predictor of depressive symptom. (3) Perceived social support mediated the relationship between depressive experiences personality and depressive symptom.
