The Effects of Social Rejection on Social Adaptation:the Mediating and Moderating Effect of Self-esteem

Abstract


Human beings are acutely responsive to how other people perceive, evaluate, and feel about them because of the human basic belonging need. As the major threat to human belonging need, Social rejection would destruct people’s physical and mental functions. Although Social rejection has been the forefront study topic, most scholars focus on some specific social phenomena, such as racial discrimination, gender bias. Fewer researchers investigated the Social rejection experiences in daily life and its impact on people’s physical or mental functions. The study researched the relationship between the Social rejection and social adaptation, and analyzed deeply the role of self-esteem between them.Study 1 adopts questionnaires to investigate the relationship between negative social life events and social adaptation, and further analyze the mediation effect of self-esteem between them. Based on the results, self-esteem mediates the relationship between negative social life events and social avoidance. In detail, negative social life events account for 8.8% of social avoidance, self-esteem mediation model account for 36.8% of it; self-esteem has partial mediation effect between negative social life events and depression , loneliness; negative social life events account for 14.3% and 22.8% respectively of depression and loneliness; self-esteem mediation model accounts for 34.0% and 39.0% of them respectively.Study 2 simulates the social condition to explore the features of attention to social threat cues, general emotion, self-feelings and social inclination of individual after being rejected through two experiments. The results as follows:①in the general and social rejection condition, there is no significant differences in the attention scores of general negative, general positive and acceptance words while there is significant differences in rejection words; There is no significant difference between the two conditions on orienting index of attention towards the rejection words, and the disengaging index of attention has come to the edge of significance; In the social rejection condition individual appears the tendency of avoiding the rejection cues; self-esteem has no significant moderating effect on the two conditions.②Compare with the general condition, the subjects in social rejection condition tend to be less pleased, more hurt feelings, and no significant difference could be found in anger, anxiety and sadness; self-esteem cannot moderate the effect of rejection on general emotion and negative self-feelings while moderate its effect on positive self-feelings, in other words, after being rejected, the one with low self-esteem has significant decline of positive self-feelings, and the one with high self esteem has steady fluctuation;③The social inclination of the subjects under the general and social rejection condition has no significant difference, however, the social inclination of the one with high self-esteem is significantly higher than that of the one with low self-esteem under both condition.
