Abstract


Backwash effect means testing for learning and teaching. Although in recent years has been a lot of backwash effect on testing the theoretical and empirical research , academic test on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Backwash of little studied . This paper reports on the Chinese civil aviation personnel English proficiency test (PEPEC) Backwash of preliminary research . In the Chinese civil aviation industry , PEPEC exam is a high- risk test. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the PEPEC exam for English learning and teaching in all aspects backwash effect and its nature . Study combined quantitative and qualitative methods of data gathering roots , the main findings are as follows . PEPEC exam for English learning and teaching in backwash effect, the positive and negative reversal effect is greater than the negative backwash effect . Positive and negative reversal effect is manifested in two ways: To improve English proficiency , students' learning content and strategies for a reasonable adjustment ; teachers instill knowledge of the language from the center of gravity shifted to train students in the aviation environment, the ability to communicate in English . PEPEC exam for English learning and teaching aspects impact. The exam for the students' English learning motivation, learning content, learning strategies have a strong influence , and in 2006 ( seniors ) and 2008 ( sophomore ) Flying there are differences between students . PEPEC exam for teachers teaching content and strategies also have a great impact . PEPEC exam for English learning and teaching backwash effect associated with several factors , such as students PEPEC exam understanding the nature of its backwash views on the mastery learning strategies , as well as teaching philosophy teacher , the teacher's knowledge structure , the school's English teaching policy. This study found that PEPEC exam backwash effect by its professional effects, including aviation English , especially English radio call special usage and it involves the impact of background knowledge . This is the ESP test backwash effect is an important feature . Based on study results , we propose to promote English learning and teaching suggestions. Students should learn to flexible application of various English learning strategies. Teachers should students a comprehensive, detailed introduction PEPEC exam, but resist teaching to the test . Schools should enrich teaching and learning materials and curriculum to make reasonable adjustments .
