Abstract


A lot of learner variables are generally said to influence the success or failure of language learning. Among these, foreign language anxiety has often been regarded as one of the most important affective variables, and test anxiety is one of the most important elements of foreign language anxiety. During the past two decades, numerous studies have consistently reported that test anxiety has great effect on test performance. Despite the consistent negative correlations between test anxiety and course grades, listening performance, oral performance respectively, few researches, if any, have addressed the situation of English writing test anxiety among college students and relationship between English writing test anxiety and English writing performance.This thesis first investigates the situation of English writing test anxiety among college students and factors affecting their English writing test anxiety. Next it explores differences of English writing test anxiety among college students in different grades, genders and levels. Finally, the relationship between English writing test anxiety and English writing performance is examined.Through random cluster sampling, the author makes a study on English writing anxiety of 154 non-English majors from Jincheng College by employing quantitative and qualitative research methods. Data for the study is collected by questionnaires including the Chinese version of English writing test anxiety and factors affecting English writing test anxiety and students’ writing scores. With the help of SPSS 11.5, Pearson correlation analysis and independent sample T-Test are computed with the target samples.The results show that English writing test anxiety is prevalent in college students. Besides, there are no significant differences of English writing test anxiety among students in different grades and levels, but girls have more English writing test anxiety than boys. Furthermore, there is a strongly significant negative correlation between students’ English writing test anxiety and their English writing performance.Based on the results of the study mentioned above, the author has advanced some feasible suggestions which can help non-English majors relieve their English writing test anxiety and improve their English writing proficiency. Finally, the author points out the limitations of the study and puts forward some recommendations for future researches in this area.
