Abstract


Being one of the major channels from which audiences can obtain much information and reach the goal of entertainment, movies and television programs have grown into a giant business in China. Subtitles become the most significant bond between audiences and television programs. It is not only linguistic transfer but cultural transmission. In a word, subtitle translation has become a quite phenomenon in today’s world, which is indicated by the fast growing number of programs introduced from foreign countries. With more and more attention drawn, large amount of research is being dedicated to this particular area in Europe. Many European scholars have issued quite a number of essays devoting to the discussion of subtitling such as the definition or classification of subtitling. Whereas in China, research into subtitle translation is relatively few except for some introductory remarks and summary of practical experience.Within the framework of Even-Zohar’s polysystem theory, Toury focused his attention on the study of norms and pointed out that translation activities are governed by a set of norms. In the studies of subtitle translation, these norms may explain how and why the translations distinct from the ST and how translators manage to make the translations acceptable. The descriptive translation studies aims at exploring these norms and their influences on translation activities as well as translators’choices of translation techniques influenced by the target culture. Adhering to source norms determines a translator’adequacy with respect to the ST and then adherence to norms of the target culture determines its acceptability within that culture. Therefore, should the translator always adhere to SL or TL? Due to no translation activity always adhere to source culture or target culture, so translation transference is unavoidable and the translation is governed by norms. This thesis attempts to adopt Toury’s initial norm theory to analyze the subtitle translation of the American sitcom Friends.
