Abstract


The exploration and researches on Multimedia - assisted Instruction (MAI) are the hot issues in educational reform currently. However, most MAI researches focus on English teaching and learning at the college stage. There are few researches concerning MAI used in secondary schools. Besides, whether the MAI software and hardware are equipped and used reasonably in English teaching and learning is valuable to study. What is more, while the traditional English teaching and learning still exist, what are the attitudes of the English teachers and their students towards MAI Therefore, it is necessary to do researches on MAI in English teaching and learning in secondary schools.Furthermore, since there is a wide gap between East and West China, MAI in secondary schools in China’s western region, particularly in rural areas, is at the initial stage. Thus, this paper is intended to survey the current situation of MAI used in rural secondary schools of China’s western region through questionnaires. The research questions to be investigated are: (1) What is the current situation of the multimedia facilities like in rural secondary schools of China’s western region? (2) How do English teachers in rural secondary schools of China’s western region think about MAI? Can they use multimedia devices in class skillfully? (3) How do students in rural secondary schools of China’s western region like MAI? What is their feedback on MAI?By analyzing the data collected, it can be concluded that: (1) Every school had at least one multimedia classroom, though multimedia devices are not widespread; (2) All English teachers realized the advantages and importance of MAI, though they seldom used the multimedia devices; (3) Although their teachers were not skillful in using multimedia devices, most of the students still liked MAI. Generally, there are still plenty of problems in MAI in rural secondary schools of China’s western region, but it continues to develop and improve.Through the data collected and suggestions for the MAI development of the schools in question, this study can be expected to help improve the English teaching and learning of rural secondary schools.
