Abstract


The writing of Chen Ran, the famous Chinese present writer, is featured by "the private novel". Several subjects play a dominant role in her novels at different periods, such as the traumatic memories of young girls, say, loneliness; the struggle between human body and soul arising from marriage and love, say, body betrayals driven by lust; the overt and covert conflicts of female with herself and with the environment, say, gender battle. From the perspective of art, Chen Ran is a master of depicting unconventional feminine image. With exquisite and unique psychological description, she precisely shows the special feminine characteristics and the richness of their spirit and mind. Just as Dai Jinhua remarks, it is a kind of "individual and feminine writing".The novels of Chen Ran display a trait of inner inclination which is different from that of Chen Zhongshi, Wang Meng and others. Chen Ran writes for women only, therefore her novels are emotional and modern. Her themes and artistic tendency resemble those of two French writers——Marguerite Duras and Sagan. Many novels of Duras and Sagan portray young girls possessing traumatic memories, as well as feminine community who are tortured by love, marriage and the desire. The characters may have lonely childhood, or they may live in a chaotic time, or they may have multiple contradictions with men and their social being. As a consequence, they show deeper concern for the survival and difficulties of contemporary women. Comparing Chen Ran’s novels with those of Duras and Sagan, this thesis tries to expound the themes of solitude philosophy, ethical narrative and feminism.Modern ethical narrative finds full expression in Liu Xiaofeng’s famous book named "The Heavy body" which combines literary narrative, philosophy language with ethical relations, and mainly interprets feminine community’s love, freedom, distress and sexiness. To some extent, Liu Xiaofeng’s modern ethical narrative sets the tone and lays the theoretical foundation for the full text. Hence, this thesis mainly develops itself from three various angles, namely, solitude philosophy of individuals, ethical predicament of modern narrative and Aphrodite type of feminism.
