Abstract

The relationship between ethnic identity and national identity is of great significance for China as a unified multi-ethnic country. Most of the university students with ethnic minority backgrounds are from western ethnic minority regions, with a natural sense of ethnic identity composed by their descent, language, religion, customs, home place and the other cultural elements. The national identity is a sense of adscription based on the citizenship with the Constitution as the core. Building a correct view of the relationship between the ethnic identity and national identity is the key issue of ideological and political education in universities for nationalities.This paper focuses on the study of the two concepts, the ethnic identity and national identity, taking the students with ethnic minority backgrounds form the six universities for nationalities affiliated to the State Ethnic Affairs Commission as the research object, using the methods of questionnaire and interview, guiding by theories and policies of nationalities of CPC, basing on the survey and statistics data, systematically discussing the situation of ethnic identity and national identity for the students with ethnic minority backgrounds from a multi-perspective angle, and put forward countermeasures and suggestions correspondingly.The paper consists of three parts. The first part is the survey and analysis of the ethnic identity of contemporary students with ethnic minority backgrounds. As a result of the influence of blood relationship, customs, religion, cognition, family, school and social environment, the sense of ethnic identity of the university students with ethnic minority backgrounds is increasing. Most of them are against the national assimilation, and very few have problems on the ideological and political quality that can not be overlooked, among which part is showing the interaction, constant infiltration and development trends. The second part is the survey and analysis of the national identity of the students with ethnic minority backgrounds. It shows that the students have a higher sense of national identity, and the situation is better with higher grades and higher level of education. A relatively stable status is showing on the concept of core values at the ethnic identity, national identity, religion and other aspects, reflecting the general requirements of the socialist core values, bringing to a correct view of all realities. The third part, based on the survey and analysis of a certain degree of contradiction between ethnic identity and national identity of the university students with ethnic minority backgrounds, provides a policy routing choices to guide the development from ethnic identity to national identity.The paper, after a detailed and rich survey and statistical analysis, proposes that to strengthen the citizenship education to university students with ethnic minority backgrounds should closely combined with the essence of traditional ethnic culture. Therefore, a coordination and unification of the sense of ethnic identity and national identity can be achieved through the process of strengthening the citizenship identity education, while tolerating the cultural differences of individual ethnic minorities, thus promoting them to acquire the sense of national identity from ethnic identity.
