Abstract


Efficiency level shows a bank’s competitiveness, while technical efficiency (TE) is more concerned with a bank’s ability in cost control and revenue maximization. Analysis of the level of technical efficiency will help to find the bank’s problems and defects in internal management and resource allocation. Reasonable income structure is not only conducive to enhancing the bank’s capacity in risk resistance, but also impoving its operational efficiency, thereby improving its competitiveness and sustainable development capability. In recent years, increasingly complex and ever-changing financial environment and intense competition have led commercial banks to lay emphasis on non-interest income business. Research on situation and development of banks’income TE helps to know the income generating capacity of these businesses and find problems in banks’existing management, thereby guide them to seek more effective measures to optimize the output structure and reach technology effective state.This paper first summarized researches about bank’s diversified income and TE at home and abroad, and elaborated on the practical value and significance of the research about income TE of banks in China. Secondly, it gave a brief introduction of relevant theories and analysis models. After a general analysis of present income structure of listed banks in China, using parametric and nonparametric analysis model respectively, this paper evaluated the TE of individual income and comprehensive income of 12 listed banks in China over the 10 financial years from 2000 to 2009, and analyzed the relationship among the TE of individual income, the diversified income structure and comprehensive TE with regression equation. Then, it anticipated TE’s development trend of next 3 years by grey model. After a sum of research conclusions, this paper put forward some suggestions for the whole bank industry, the large state-owned banks and the medium-sized joint-stock banks in China according to their characteristics respectively: Strengthen financial innovation, speed up the pace of intermediate business’s development and improve the overall quality of human resources; Large state-owned banks should optimize the structure of property right, improve the credit assets’quality, use their superiority in information to improve the intermediate business’TE and simplify the administration to alleviate staff redundant condition; Medium-sized joint-stock banks should reconsider their present work emphasis and choose more suitable and efficient ways of development.
