Abstract


Established in 1974 by Cleveland University, "National History Day" has become most influential history research competition of middle school of the U.S.A. There are about 700,000 middle school students participate each year. Not only "National History Day" fostered students’ historical thinking capability and pushed national history education, but also provided very rich resources for history education and is very helpful for "American Citizen" spirits forming. It is very helpful for history education reforming of the U.S.A.History education reforming is developing quickly in China nowadays. Undoubtedly, we can learn a lot from the successful practices of "National History Day" and apply to our history education.Using educational theory, this article focus on research of "National History Day" by studying real cases. And it tries to figure out the characteristics, effects and the learning for our history education reforming of "National History Day" .I. Establishment of "National History Day" .In sixty of 20 century, the American history developed quickly. However, history education lagged behind. To foster people’ s recognition of American history under multi culture background, "National History Day" started its journey.II. Characteristics of "National History Day"It emphasizes the importance of history education and focus on training up students’ historical thinking habits. It also emphasizes the professionalism of history research. Being public and open to society is the most important part of American national history education.III. "National History Day" trains up modern citizen and boosts the education reforming.It’ s very helpful for school and students to achieve education targets, and up the stake of history research. It helps students to gain successful experience.IV. What we can learn from "National History Day" .History recognition is the foundation of social harmony under multi culture background. In the process of modernization and globalization, fostering cultural inclusiveness is useful for the harmony and stable of multiple international relationships. To boost national history education, a nation-wide mechanism should be in place. Emphasis should be given to the combination of both micro and macro, that is to say the targets of history education should be combined with detail practices of particular history courses.
