Abstract


Education in former Soviet Union once was the most powerful in the world and higher education had made outstanding achievements. One of the characteristics of USSR higher education was the traditional university entrance examination system, which had selected massive high-levels for the country and had made tremendous contribution to social and economic development. Russian Federation carried on the tradition of education in former Soviet Union, inheriting the traditional university entrance examination system. In 2001 Russia began the pilot test of the Unified State Examination.The paper studied the Unified State Examination in Russia mainly from the respect in microscopic and macroscopic. First, it described the history of traditional university entrance examination system in former Soviet Union, and summarized the background, cause and characteristic of the Unified State Examination in Russia from 2001 to 2007. Secondly, it studied the quality of the Unified State Examination in examination paper, teaching programs, the content validity and the students’ result from the microscopic aspect. Then, it analyzed the influence of the Unified State Examination on general education, the entrance opportunity of students in different stratums, regions and the social development from the macroscopic aspect. Finally, it forecast the tendency of the Unified State Examination reform in the environment of decreasing school-age students and stable society.
