Abstract


Over the past three decades, the market-oriented economic reform has brought about many changes in China’s social structure. One of them is the fast growing numbers of the Chamber of Commerce, one sort of civil society institutions. The Chamber of Commerce has played a more important role not only in establishing civil society but also in promoting local economy development, especially in developed regions in China. Therefore it is of great interest to study how the economic reform has impacts on local society structure in China by looking at the development of the Chamber of Commerce.The literature has been concerned with the development of Chamber of Commerce in China since the beginning of 1990s. Using multiple theories relevant to sociology, they have considered many aspects of the Chamber of Commerce, such as its history, its function and its relationship with the government. However, previous studies failed to provide a general framework to analyze the development of Chamber of Commerce since they paid more attention to how the Chamber of Commerce works in some developed regions, in particular in Wenzhou area. Beyond them, this study discusses the role of the Chamber of Commerce in transforming local society structure and how to promote its further development in the case of Lianyungang, a less developed city in China.There are four parts involved in this thesis. In the first part, based on the theoretical framework of the Chamber of Commerce this research indentifies the definition and the key feature of Chamber of Commerce in the context of China. In the second part, the study looks back to the history of Chamber of Commerce and focus on the recent development of Chamber of Commerce in Lianyungang. the research introduces the organization structure of Chamber of Commerce in Liangyungang and evaluates its achievements in promoting local business development. The Chamber of Commerce in Lianyungang is found to have played a significant role in building strong relationship between the local government and the non-governmental enterprises. It has united all the non-governmental enterprises directors to promote local market economy development during the past two decades. It also has become the representative of these directors, protecting their political interests and rights of doing business. Part Three analyzes the difficulties the Chamber of Commerce in Lianyungang has met and discusses the constraints of its further development. These include how to improve the service of Chamber of Commerce, affirm the legitimacy of Chamber of Commerce, and attract more enterprises and their directors to join the federation, and so on. The last part is the conclusion of the thesis, suggesting the way in which the Chamber of Commerce can work better in the city area.
