Marine functional zone is the core work of marine functional division, however, due to the complex of sea area functional property, so many factors involved, which leads marine functional zone lacks an effective quantitative analysis method so far. Based on both of national and international researches and existent problems of marine functional division, according to index method, overlay analysis and comprehensive analysis method ,all methods supported by the GIS spatial analysis, are studied preliminarily in this paper. The combination of the theoretical and practical research, application of rules of an index assessment model, overlay analysis and comprehensive analysis are proposed in this paper, and then applied to Yantai marine functional division work.Firstly, this paper introduces marine functional division development process , theories technique development of our country and marine function division situations abroad, summarizes main existent problems and shortages of marine functional division methods presently, puts forward technical ideas of marine functional division methods supported by GIS spatial analysis.Secondly, this paper discusses application scopes of index method and main division basis in different styles in marine functional division, establishes an index system that takes sea area natural attribute as principal part, studies the method of determining evaluation unit and the model of distinguishing function. The overlay analysis on the basis of marine natural attributes indicators, sea area space management, sea-used planning, sea area usage conditions, and so on, are proposed, and expatiates the GIS spatial overlay analysis with the example of marine functional zone in Yantai city.Finally, this paper discusses the basic principles of comprehensive analysis, analyzes sea area zone formed by overlay analysis and determines marine functional zone. The research method achieves better results in the practice application of marine functional division in Yantai city. At the same time, this paper advises us that there are some respects of marine functional division should be further improved and perfected immediately.
