Abstract

Live multimedia streaming has emerged to be immensely popular along with the increasing entertainment demand from millions of Internet users. Recent studies have shown that P2P structure in media streaming systems could be an efficient way to solve the problem. The essential advantages of P2P multimedia streaming schemes have mainly been determined by the natural property of P2P structure such as scalability, autonomy and resilience to dynamics. However, there still exist problems and significant challenges due to strict requirements of live streaming. First, most of current P2P systems are vulnerable to peer dynamics and network congestion. Second, some systems built for satisfying stringent requirement of bandwidth and continuity are too much complex.Live Streaming Recent studies have convinced that network coding can improve the performance of live streaming in terms of start-up delays, resilience to peer dynamics, as well as reduced bandwidth costs on dedicated streaming servers. Also, there still exist some strategy drawbacks and neglected problems which need to be further researched. In addition to the commonly used evaluation parameters mentioned above, we focus on other key factors, playback lag, which has not been fully studied in previous work. In this paper, we present SonicStream, a novel and full implementation of live P2P streaming system with consideration of playback lag. In pursuit of a further enhanced user experience, we revise traditional peer selection/data scheduling methods. Our work here is to objectively and thoroughly evaluate the performance of our P2P media streaming system incorporated with overlay construction and network coding. And also, we present some work associated with real implementation system, which the former simulation studies never encounter. Through a series of experimental evaluations and a cautious comparison with the latest similar work R~2, the superior performance of SonicStream has been preliminarily verified.
