Abstract


This thesis is primarily written as on the diplomatic Strategy and practical achievement of both Yan Ying and Zi Chan, basing on their activities as historical facts depicted in the historical philology reference such as ZuoZhuan, YanZiChunQiu therein as clues, and integrating their personal, family, nations vis-à-vis their eras, thereby making academic comparison by diverse categories and subjects.Yan Ying and Zi Chan was two prominent diplomatic premiers in the great tribulation of the late ChunQiu Period. They both expressed significant diplomatic achievements, and was influential to the survival and development in serving their countries. This thesis has placed two similar personate together, in terms of their era, experience, mentality, making analysis and comparison on their background, principles, means and ends of their diplomatic practices. Expounding on the intricate life, full of twists and turns and struggling, indulged in complex environment such as homes, nations, noble individuality, distinctive conducts, of both Yan Ying and Zi Zhan, reflected thereupon how an individual could influence development of each feudal nation in that late ChunQiu Period, through these contrast.In the Introduction, the authorship and its published year of YanZiChunQiu was firstly introduced, followed by a summary of previous research achievements, through the following three areas. First, an integrated study of diplomatic research in ChunQiu Period. Second, the strength of Qi nation and diplomatic research during Yan Ying’s ruling. Third, the situation of Zheng nation and diplomatic research during Zi Chan’s ruling. Hence, a comparative research for diplomatic strategy could be conducted based on comprehensive studies of previous.Part I, comparative analysis for individual characters. Firstly, introduction to both their life and experiences, birth and death years, years engaged in political stratum, period of ruling, etc. Thus providing an objectively and rationalizing platform for comparing a series of diplomatic activities of both Yan Ying and Zi Zhan Part II, base upon the previous chapter, provide a simplified version of introduction to the enclosed environment that both Yan Ying and Zi Zhan survived.Thereupon making analysis and comparison on their background, principles, means and ends of various aspect of their diplomatic practices, ascertain a holistic viewpoint might be obtained from available historical materials. Through vase amount of case studies and rational analysis, in Chapter 6 derived a summary, which explored into the cause of similarity and diversity of their diplomatic strategy..Part III, standing in a historical viewpoint, from relevant scholastic appraisal and historical materials, make analysis objectively the effectiveness of the diplomatic practices of both Yan Ying and Zi Zhan. Also, from a different perspective, another viewpoint from a definite or sequential time analyzed the variation of pre and post life happenings of both Yan Ying and Zi Zhan. Studied diversely how each stage in their life and how a specific personality had influenced their nations, the era the lived, wherein testified their diplomatic acheievement not only limited to their own nation but had extended to the entire ChunQiu era.
