Abstract


The issue of female’s social status is a hot topic to which the society pays great attention nowadays. The evaluation on female’s social status is in association with examination on the development of female’s social status in history. It is a foundational work that we make study on female’s social status of certain period from historical perspective. The Spring and Autumn period is a key era in the Chinese culture development process,in which great changes had taken place. This period, filled with turbulence and drastic conflicts between different political groups, took intense impacts on female’s social status and impelled its changes. The development of female’s social status in the Spring and Autumn period had special influence and significance in the entire ancient Chinese society. It will be helpful that the development process of female’s social status will be fully understood by the examination on it. This article will make a more comprehensive description and appraisal on female’s social status in the Spring and Autumn period based on gender and historical point of view.The article consists of three parts: the introduction, the main body and the conclusion.The Introduction: The previous research achievement will be retrospected, and their academic value and problems in current research will be revealed.The First Chapter: The conception and connotation of female’s social status. The evolvement of female’s social status theory will be reviewed, and an introduction to the conception and connotation of female’s social status in sociology will be given. This part is to illustrate purpose, significance, method and train of thought of the research as well.The Second Chapter: The change of female’s social status before the Spring and Autumn period. The change of female’s social status before the Spring and Autumn period will be reviewed. This part will make a broad-brush description of the formation and development of gender roles in the times before the Spring and Autumn period, hence, female’s social status in the primitive society, the Xia Dynasty, the Shang Dynasty, the Western Zhou Dynasty will be summarized respectively.The Third Chapter:The social and historical background of the Spring and Autumn period and the gender exhibition of female in the Spring and Autumn period documents. The social and historical background of the Spring and Autumn period is to illuminate from three aspects of politics, economics and culture. The female’s gender words will be presented and given a brief explanation.The Forth Chapter: The status of female during Spring and Autumn Period. This time, the status of female was inferior to the Xia-Shang Dynasty. The status of female was declining. But compares to the later generation, the status of female is higher in the Spring and Autumn period. According to the specific historical situation of the Spring and Autumn Period, we will carry on the appraisal in five aspects, the political status, the economic status, the family status, the educational status, the healthy status. Study this time’s feminine social status on two stratification planes, comparing with other time’s feminine social status and masculine social status. At the same time, discuss and analysis the reason of this time feminine politics, the economical, the family, the education, the healthy status.The Epilogue gives a summary to the status of female during the Spring and Autumn Period, summarize the characteristic of feminine status in this time, and discuss the influence of the status of female in the Spring and Autumn Period on the entire ancient society , and carry on some thinking to the present .
