Abstract


Synonyms account for a great percentage in English vocabulary.Using synonyms in a correct and an appropriate way is an essential part for Chinese EFL learners to break through English vocabulary as well as the key to improve English writing and communicative capability.This paper employs the corpus-based approach,with the combination of qualitative and quantitative analysis,to explore the uses of the synonyms by Chinese EFL learners. A group of synonyms,get,gain,obtain,achieve,and acquire,are studied in this paper to find out the features in the use of the synonyms by CEM students in terms of word frequency,collocation and colligation through a comparison between the native speakers’ corpus BROWN and the Chinese learners’ corpus WECCL.Afterwards,the reasons for the deviant uses are explored.The findings show that there exist great differences in the uses of the synonymous group by the Chinese EFL learners and the native speakers.Specifically,(1) In respect of word frequency,CEM students overuse get,gain,obtain,and achieve significantly;as to acquire,there is no significant difference in word frequency;(2) With regard to collocational behaviors,CEM students are inclined to use atypical collocates and clusters and misuse some collocates and clusters of the synonymous group;(3) In terms of colligations,CEM learners tend to overuse,underuse and misuse some colligations of the synonyms.Negative transfer from mother tongue and the lack of linguistic knowledge of target language are the main reasons for the deviances in the uses of synonyms.This paper conducts a systematic study on the uses of the synonymous group by Chinese EFL learners.It is expected that this study can become an effective supplement to the previous synonym studies and make some contributions to the development of interlanguage theory in terms of synonyms.Meanwhile,it is also hoped that the findings can provide some references for English vocabulary as well as synonyms teaching and learning in China.
