Abstract


With the rapid development of internet technology, the relation between people’s daily life and the internet becomes much closer than before. It has changed the way of reading news gradually. People begin to be willing to read news in the internet, which is more convenient and expeditious.In this situation, more and more news websites have appeared in the internet, which compete with each other to attract reader’s clicks. At the same time, the life style has become faster and faster. People have no time to read news one by one or in detail, and sometimes just have a view to the headlines. Moreover, the space of one page in the internet is limited, in which there are usually just the news headlines. It produces problems to internet news editors: how to get more clicks and what kind of news headline is acceptable. Because of globalization, more people start to learn English. Reading English is one of the useful ways they used to strengthen the ability of reading comprehension. So English news headlines are the objects to be analyzed in this paper.Intertextuality was coined by Kristina in 1969, which was studied in literature criticism extensively and brought a revolution of thinking pattern in literature. In 1981. Beaugrand and Dressier brought this theory into text linguistics as a very important notion in discourse analysis. They manifest a fact: Intertextuality is the fundamental nature of all the texts.In the previous study on intertextuality, it has been found that intertextuality is not only the basic nature of a text, but the necessary way to make the text attractive.In this paper, we will try to find whether intertextuality is used in the edition of internet news headlines. Firstly, the research background and inadequacy of the existing researches will be introduced. Then this paper will provide a review of the theory, intertextuality. Different classifications of intertextuality will be discussed. In this study, Xin Bin’s classification is going to be used. After the explanation of key terms: news headline, intertextuality. and optimal relevance. the paper turns to the key part. The data collected from several famous English new websites will be analyzed. After the qualitative analysis, it will summarize the research to answer the research questions and give suggestions to the edition of news headlines in network.
