Abstract


Since the birth of theory of relativity and quantum mechanics in early 20th century, Holism, as a methodology has got more concerns. The paper shows the origin and development of Holism and concludes the basic principle and characteristics of Holism. The basic concept of Holism derives from two major groups: 1) Physicists, chemists and biologists who study Holism in the aspect of structure and function, think that the whole have its certain structure and function rather than the sum of its parts. 2) Herbalist doctors, ecologists, environmentalists and sociologist who understand Holism, think that Holism as a way of thinking and methodology should be applied in knowing the matter.By Fur modality science, new developed field guided by Holism, which explores the relationship between the modality-structure of Fur （including: length, diameter, color, squama, cortex, medulla .etc） and its function, application in taxonomy, and ecology on mammals, the paper has shown the effects of Holism on scientific research systemically.1. Inaugurating functional morphology. The function of Fur depends on the modality and structure of Fur. Studies of hair morphology should combine with studies of functional morphology, especially in morphological diversification and convergent evolution, concentrating on the relationship between morphology and functions.2. Improving application in taxonomy. More information about hair morphology of more species should be taken in order to study their diversity. At the same time in studies of hair-based taxonomy and species identification, attentions should be paid to the representative ness, integrity of sampling and objectiveness of observation.3. Discovering relation with ecology. Studies of hair morphology should combine with ecology through analyzing the relationship between hair morphology and season, and geographic origin.In general, Holism as methodology is scientific and feasible on hair morphology. Under the guide of Holism, hair morphology studies and teaching should put stress on the combination of multiple disciplines and looking at problems from different angles so as to develop rapidly along a scientific way.
