Abstract

Culture and language are two important aspects in the teaching of English. Since the 1980s a growing number of Chinese language education has realized the importance of cross-cultural awareness, and to develop learners' intercultural awareness, we must pay attention to the culture of teaching. Currently, a lot of the achievements of the theoretical study of the culture of teaching, but the the cultural teaching practice still unsatisfactory. The one hand, the University of Foreign Language Teaching in China has yet to get rid of the influence of the traditional mode of teaching; cross-cultural awareness in the other hand, many of the teachers is not high enough, the lack of cross-cultural experiences and cultural teaching experience and guidance of the theory, which lead to their lack a deep understanding of foreign cultures, and will not be able to bear the corresponding cultural teaching tasks. Although some universities did some attempts in this regard, but the absence of relevant theory into practice, so the teaching effect is not obvious. At the same time, the students also lack the necessary cross-cultural awareness. The purpose of this paper is to do some useful exploration of hope in the the Milton Bennett cross-cultural awareness development model under the guidance of Chinese college students how to develop 21st century cross-cultural awareness and give some tentative recommendations. The first chapter introduces the research background, on the basic framework for research purposes and the thesis. Chapter II first start from the relationship between language and culture, the inseparability of language and culture, as well as the necessity of cultural teaching and language teaching at the same time. Second, from the development stage of the cultural teaching, the three aspects of the teaching methods and modes of cultural teaching review, and pointed out that the culture of teaching and language teaching has equal importance. Again, respectively, compared with the cultural differences of the three aspects of the English and Chinese language from the vocabulary, syntax and language, while Chinese people and Westerners differences in non-verbal communication, as an example of Chinese college students lack of cultural awareness, cross-cultural communication, they will encounter a variety of misunderstandings and result in cross-cultural communication failure. Finally, a review of the status of the teaching of Chinese culture, pointed out that the Chinese culture teaching still a long way to go. The difficulties encountered by foreign teachers in the college English teaching from their lack of understanding of Chinese culture and Chinese Foreign Language Teaching. The fourth chapter proposes possible ways to develop students' cross-cultural awareness. Of Milton Bennett's cross-cultural awareness development model, and based on their findings, the main object of cross-cultural awareness training to meet the requirements of cross-cultural awareness and need to make improvements and then put forward four principles of cross-cultural awareness training - Systemic principle, the principle of hierarchy, comparison principle and interactive principles, and finally elaborated specific cross-cultural awareness training methods - vocabulary pedagogy, reading pedagogy heard teaching law, writing pedagogy, four methods are closely integrated and Culture Teaching from different points of view, they can promote the development of students cross-cultural awareness and intercultural communicative competence. Chapter first of the papers do a summary, and then draw its research significance, and pointed out the limitations of the paper and in the future may continue to study the field.
