Abstract


Proverbs are the masses of the people in the long-term life practice to create the popular language, it is language concise, easy to understand, and the Meaning of Meaningful crystallization of people's wisdom, is the essence of language, as if a bright pearl in the language. English proverbs as an important part of Western culture, not only is the crystallization of the wisdom of the Western people, but also the cultural heritage of the Western countries, is an important window to understand Western culture. English proverb has been subject to the attention of scholars at home and abroad as an important language and cultural phenomenon. However, most of the studies are starting from the point of view of the traditional linguistics, the main contents include: the origins of proverbs, cultural factors, as well as the proverbial comparison of the translation and the English and Chinese proverbs. There are a small number of scholars from a new angle of cognitive linguistics study, also put forward a number of ideas and methods, but did not reveal in detail the proverb understand the process of cognitive mechanisms. With the rapid development of cognitive linguistics, Fukang Nie (Fauconnier) mental space theory based on the concept of integration theory (conceptual integration theory). The theory has a complete set of the operating mechanism of the basic operation of four mental space: two input spaces, a generic space and a synthetic space. In the integration process, the composition of the two input space is selectively projected onto the synthetic space, through a combination of perfect and interpretation, the formation of a new structure of an input space not synthetic space, that highlight the structure. The theory because of its strong explanatory power of Chinese and foreign scholars are concerned about much. Demonstrated its strong explanatory power of them from different angles, but so far very few people that will be applied to the study of English proverbs. This article uses the theoretical analysis and qualitative research methods, the use of the concept of integrating theory, try English proverbs to understand the significance of the process of building and cognitive mechanisms. Conceptual integration network is the core of the concept of integration theory, which mainly include four types of networks, a single network, mirroring network, single-domain networks and dual-domain network. Analysis, this paper pointed out: proverb in understanding the process, these networks are able to follow each operation mechanism of proverbs to make in-depth analysis, reveal the cognitive process of understanding proverbs. This finding confirms the theory has strong explanatory power of the English proverbs, also made a contribution to the study of English proverbs. In the same time, the paper also pointed out the inadequacies of the study and future research inspired.
