Abstract


Translation studies (TS) can’t ignore the ideological encounters. Since the 1980s when translation studies witnesses the "cultural turn", many scholars have made great contributions in this regard. However, more and more voices are being currently raised to contest his approach since it seems to overemphasize ideological manipulation on translation but ignore the linguistic study of text, having no systematic formal framework of analysis.Drawing upon the previous studies, this research discusses ideological manipulation in the translation of reported speech internally and externally by carrying out a case study based on a news report and its translated text around a video online released by "the Turkestan Islamic Party" threatening attacks during the Beijing Olympic Games , proposing to establish a systematic formal framework of analysis for ideological manipulation on translation activity—the combination of linguistically-oriented approach and ideological approach.This research adopts Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework of CDA and Lefevere’s theory of manipulation as theoretical basis, precisely resorting to parameters to news reported speech and ideological factors manipulating translation as analytical tools. First it makes an in-depth comparison of source news report and target news report from the aspects of news source, reporting mode, reporting setting and reporting content , and then examines their differences and the deep-rooted reasons for such differences. After that, the present study argues that ideological manipulation in the translation of news reported speech is not only embedded in internal structure of the text itself but also the whole process of text production: selection of source text at the preliminary stage of translation and adoption of translation strategies at the operational stage of translation. The specific translation strategies involved in this study are deletion, addition, shifting and word choice. Ideological factors, according to Lefevere, are translator’s ideology and the ideologies imposed on the translator by patronage, author (reporter) and readers in receiving culture.Methodologically, it is mainly a qualitative one, taking bottom-up approach with table description and quantitative statistics. Through detailed discussion and analysis, this study finally concludes that ideological manipulation on translation is reflected in textual and extra-textual aspects. We should explore translation activity internally and externally for full understanding of TS’s ideological complexity. By suggesting such an analytical framework, the author also hopes that this research intends to provide some insights on ideology in translation studies and some guiding significance for news translators and their real translation practice in particular.
