Abstract


Entering the twenty-first century, international higher education has emerged the new situation and status, especially in the internationalization of higher education, international competition for talent and cross-discipline. During this situation, John Hennessey took up the post of the tenth president of Stanford University and he has foresighted, unique opinion regarding the origination of world First-class University and the first-class personnel training. Based on exhaustive data, in light of John Hennessey’s ideas of higher education, combined with his practices, this research will try to explore him from various aspects and angles, hope to provide the reform of higher education in China with reference and inspiration through the research of John Hennessey’s ideas and practices of higher education.This thesis mainly includes three parts.The first part introduces the concerned John Hennessey’s academic career and the characteristics of that time.The second part analyzes John Hennessey’s ideas and practices of higher education in greater detail. The core of his higher education idea can be summed up as humanities education and application of science education with the means to nurture the excellence to deal with the challenges of human survival and development. It is separately reflected in three aspects: subject construction, students cultivation, faculties construction. The part of subject construction is composed of promoting cross-disciplinary collaborative research, emphasizing on education in the humanities. The part of students cultivation is composed of strengthening Stanford Introductory Studies, starting "Undergraduate Education Campaign", creating "Commission on Graduate Education", emphasizing the diversity of students. The part of faculties construction is composed of paying attention to the diversified of teachers, selecting elite teachers, giving fair treatment to the faculties.The third part mainly discusses the evaluation of John Hennessey’s idea of higher education. He is a far-sighted, broaden horizons and pragmatic style of principals.The forth part is the inspiration of John Hennessey’s idea and practice of higher education for the reform and development of Chinese Universities includes: firstly, paying great attention to humanism education, changing in personnel training concept; secondly, carrying out cross-disciplinary projects, promoting collaborative research; thirdly, revising undergraduate education programs substantially, upgrading the quality of undergraduate education; fourthly, formulating the policy of tuition fees for the training of service; fifthly, establishing self-development location, highlighting the characteristics.
