Development in technology have undoubtedly improved our standard of living. Many of the discoveries that have benefited our lives. However, have also led to contamination and destruction of the natural environment. Industrial and agricultural toxins such as chlorinated and hydroxylated aromatic compounds cause significant environmental pollution and health problems, due to their toxicity and overall recalcitrance to microbial degradation. Utilizing the metabolic processes of bacteria to degrade these toxin at a contaminated site is the ultimate goal of microbial bioremediation. To realize this goal, one must understand the physiological response of biodegrading bacteria to commonly encountered environmental toxins. In this study, phenol was chosen as model compound since it is a toxic aromatic compound of environmental interest, and biodegradation information is readily available for microorganisms. Phenol has traditionally been removed by physicochemical methods which can be complex and expensive, while biological treatment don’t have these problems. In this study, strains JFJ001, JFJ014 and JFJ2 were isolated from an activated sludge treated coking-plant wastewater. These bacteria are able to use phenol as sole carbon source and can consumption the phenol initial concentration 800mg/L up. 16s rDNA sequence results shows JFJ001、JFJ014、JFJ2 may be a novel species of Halobacillus sp.、Pseudomonas sp.、Rhodococcus sp. . The best environmental conditions for JFJ001、JFJ014 and JFJ2 are of the pH8,7,8. in 180r/min speed and on temperature of 35℃. Sodium acetate and glucose as a second carbon source can increase the phenol removal rate, while the opposite effect of sourose. The effect of nitrogen source was not obvious. Strains are able to use phenol as the sole carbon source to growth. The effect of phenol ratio increase with the increase number of bacteria. COD removal is also effective. Monod and Haldane model was selected as JFJ001’s kinetic model.
