Permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) has been widely used in industry due to their independent on excitation current, light volume, high efficiency, and high power density. In conventional motion control systems, optical encoders or rotary transformer are used for this purpose. However, these additional sensors increase the costs of the system and decrease the reliability. Therefore, it is very significative to carry out study on sensorless control systems. In last several years, there have been numerous publications on sensorless operation, but most of these techniques only rely on the fundamental machine equations, which limits the low speed operation of the machine and are deficiency on initial rotor position detection especially. With this background, the study is carried out as follows in this thesis.Firstly, the structure and the mathematical model of PMSM are described. Based on this, the thesis deduces the principle of saliency detection using high frequency signal injection and simulation model is established to research how the method is used in vector control system of PMSM. The results verify its availability in position and velocity estimation.Secondly, according to saturation effect of winding induction, a simulation model is established to research how the method is used to detect initial rotor position. The results show that the method is effective in saliency detection, but incapable in the N/S polarity distinguishing. Aimed at this problem, the thesis analyzes the influence generated by stator current in winding inductance. According to the variation characteristics of the current range, a method has been proposed to distinguish N/S polarity, which solves the problem that estimate result would be reverse with the traditional method based on high frequency signal injection.Finally, an experiment platform based on dSPACE real-time simulation system for initial rotor position detection was developed to verify the proposed method. The experimental results show that the improved method is effective to detect initial rotor position correctly.The results in this thesis will be helpful to initial rotor position detection for both structural saliency PMSM and saturated saliency PMSM, and have laid the foundation for the sensorless control in whole speed region.
