Abstract

With the continuous rising of the global temperature and worsening of the greenhouse effect in recent years, China has made its promise of energy conservation and emission reduction to cope with the climate crisis. New kinds of energy must be found to replace the old ones to obtain the sustainable development in consideration of the great pressure of energy conservation and emission reduction as well as the short supply of the fossil energy. In western China, thanks to the special geographical conditions, there are rich reserves of new energy, especially wind and sun, which make up the majority of the gross domestic savings, and provide the basic conditions for the exploitation of new energy. Exploiting and utilizing new energy can not only help ameliorate the ecological environment of western region, but also improve a scale-style development of new energy to bring there great economic benefits. Meanwhile, the exploitation and utilization of new energy also have strategic and political meaning in the world today.Thanks to its geographical position and characteristics,Jiu Quan is rich in its wind energy resources, which has such advantages as stability, good continuity, and no existing of destructive wind velocity.Therefore, Jiuquan is especially fit for developing wind power industry.The building and putting into use of the hundreds of wind power sites with the capacity of 1000w in Jiuquan city broke new ground for exploiting and utilizing new energy in the western region. As this is an unprecedented project in China as well as in the whole world, there must be a lot of problems and difficulties in the process. By doing the SWOT analysis of wind power industry in Jiuquan, the author managed to find out the advantages, disadvantages, opportunities and challenges in the development of the wind power sites. On that basis, pertinent suggestions have been given to exploit and utilize new energy in Jiuquan, and some prospective research has also been completed in this thesis, which is targeted to make some contributions to the exploitation and utilization of new energy in China’s western region.
