Abstract

Urbanization is an important socio-economic phenomenon in the world. Since the reform and opening up China’s urbanization are in a scale and speed ahead of times the development of small towns is increasingly attaching greater importance by academia and government. With the implementation of strategies such as "the development of small towns as an important way for China’s urbanization" and Western Development announced by the government traditional small towns in southwest are confronted with a rare historical opportunity for development. At the same time in the context of globalization urban features and characteristics as a carrier of long-term cultural development are gradually disappearing around the world. Small towns in Yunnan Province especially in Southwest China mostly have a long history with ethnic folk and traditional features and accumulated a profound historical and natural environment. To protect their culture and regional characteristics rationally and to deal with the phenomenon of similarity under globalization is the key to have the comparativeness of pushing forward the healthy development of traditional small town in southwest China.This article mainly studies the regeneration of traditional small towns and city design and style. I try to combine the interdisciplinary approaches of sociology ethnonymicseconomics architecture and urban planning and analyze the long-standing problems and design defects in the development of traditional small towns. With a practice analysis of the style and features of Yuanjiang County Yunnan Province and the design of the inner city of Yuanjiang CountyI try to explore the thinking and approach of the regeneration of traditional small towns and city design and style in Southwest China (or precisely Yunnan Province).First I summarize the existing theoretical studies on the regeneration of traditional small towns and city design and style analyze the opportunity long-standing problems and design defects of traditional small towns in the process of urbanization; with the theories summary and realistic analysis of advantages and disadvantages I hope to provide the theoretical fundamentals and practical basis for the regeneration of traditional small towns and city design and style. Second I analyze the existing problems of city design and style of Yuanjiang County which is a typical example of traditional small towns in Southwest China (or precisely Yunnan Province) and on this basis I further analyze the general plotting factors and methods in the design of the inner city of Yuanjiang County and hope to provide a typical illustration and practical evidence for the regeneration of traditional small towns and city design and style. Third through analogy and contrast combined with mass instance analysis on the regeneration of traditional small towns and city design and style in Southwest China I hope to come up with some feasible directions and approaches for the regeneration of traditional small towns and city design and style in Southwest China. Finally I summarize speculate on and look into the future of the regeneration of traditional small towns and city design and style in Southwest China I hope the traditional small towns will develop in a more rational and healthy way with their distinctive features.
