Abstract

Word processing and image processing semantic representation of the existence of different systems with a debate has long been a topic of. In recent years, with the development of brain imaging techniques, the differences in processing neural representations of words and pictures are gradually revealed. The main purpose of this study is induced by comparing the Chinese vocabulary Processing and Image processing ERP components to reveal the different processes and neural mechanisms of lexical processing and Image Processing, thus proving lexical processing and Image processing is a process of two separate, semantic characterization of different systems. In this study, 70 Chinese concrete nouns as a representative of the Chinese vocabulary, construct 70 Chinese fake word, and select specific objects in 70 pictures and 70 can not be named the picture as experimental material. Experiments using simple lexical decision task, object decision task and picture naming task to induce the appropriate ERP. Presented in lexical processing experimental section, were asked to judge whether two Chinese characters for the word. Processing the experimental part of the picture, the request was presented by the trial judge the picture whether named, if named, and also require the trial to Chinese noun naming. Analyzed by observing the four types of stimuli evoked ERP components, this study found that the The Chinese Vocabulary Processing and Image Processing presence of significant differences, mainly in the distribution of ERP components induced volatility, latency and brain regions. Word processing and image processing since stimulus was presented after 100ms difference. The overall picture evoked ERP vocabulary evoked ERP correct, vocabulary evoked a more significant negative wave brain front, the picture is evoked more significant posterior part of the positive wave. 600ms after stimulus, Chinese words and images evoked N200, P300 and N400 effect, but each component significant differences exist in the vocabulary and picture processing. N200 N200 evoked by the words than the pictures evoked more negative, the incubation period is shorter and more concentrated in the forehead area. The picture evoked P300 than vocabulary induced P300 corrections, vocabulary P300 evident in the frontal and parietal regions, while the broader picture P300 brain distribution. Words induced N400 N400 effect than the picture evoked more significant, the volatility more negative, and the vocabulary N400 is concentrated in the central area to the temporal region, the picture N400 is more pronounced in the frontal area. Specific N300 component of this study did not find the picture processing, but found the N320 and N350, respectively, in the processing of pictures and words, and they defined as early N400 component. In addition, between nouns with false words evoked ERP objects picture and can not be named picture evoked ERP there are also a significant difference. The results of this study show that the Chinese word processing and picture processing different time course and neural mechanisms different characterization of the system, removing some of the overlap interaction, the Chinese word processing and picture processing in semantic memory, the two systems are separate and support the multiple semantic system model and dual coding theory. The study also found that the pictures can not be named can activate the same semantic information processing. But the dynamic activation process, as well as words and pictures of the brain areas of word processing and image processing in sentence processing time the process has yet to be in-depth study.
