Abstract


Death is the theme of Katherine Mansfield’literary writings. Her works are characteristic of death、terror、illusion and so on. Through the analysis of the life and works of Katherine Mansfield, this thesis intends to study her ideology of death to investigate the philosophy connotation and the manisfestation of this theme so as to analyze the reasons for her choice of death as the theme for his works.The thesis can be divided into three parts.Part 1 The philosophy connotation of the ideology of deathIn Katherine Mansfield’works the theme of death may impress the readers a lot. Its connotation covers four aspects. Firstly, escaping death; secondly, pursuiting death; thirdly, caring for death; fourthly ; overpassing death; "Death”makes one feel sympathetic and sad. However, in her works, we can see that the author is longing for life and seeking for love by writing death. and in fact, in her life, Katherine Mansfield also tries to live a healthier and happier life. Though her description of the sadness and fear of death and her hate of the cruel realistic world, we can find his great longing and zest for a beautiful life.Part 2 The manifestation of the ideology of deathI think, Katherine Mansfield’manifestaion of the theme of death is special .she prefers describing the influence of death to writing the situation of death; Secondly, she likes writing death indirectly, even in some works, there is not a word of“death”, in fact ,she writes a story about death. Sometimes ,she also likes beautifying the death or uglifying the death.Part 3 Reasons for his selection of death as the themeIn her short lifetime, Katherine Mansfield faces a lot of departing、diseases and the fear of death. In order to let out her depressed feelings and express her desire for the beautiful life, she indulges herself in writing. Her disease is the direct reason for her choosing death as the theme. War and society are the other reasons. In her mind ,she hopes to live the happy、harmonious and meaningful life. But the reasons make her not reach her wishes. So in her writings ,she likes to write the theme to describe her beautiful desire and cherish the living life .In a word, death is the theme of Katherine Mansfield’literary creation. She appreciates sadness、poverty and death., Her death theme is deserved a great deal of study.
