Abstract


Objective:The present study is performed to explore the correlation of atherosclerotic plaque and its growth sites, the index of hemodynamics and vascular intima in carotid arteria. Methods:The cases that were examined reached 18248 in total. They were divided into 7 groups according to the presence or absence of plaque in the common carotid artery (CCA) and the thickness of vascular intima. They were respectively measured the intima-media thickness (IMT), the presence of plaque and the index of blood flow in the bilateral CCA. The peak systolic velocity (PSV), end of diastolic velocity (EDV), resistance index (RI), pulsatility index (PI) and PSV/EDV are measured. Results:The distribution of the plaque in CCA:those with plaque in both sides accounted for the majority, and the percentage of those with plaque in the left side was higher than the right side; in the group of subjects with increase in IMT, the highest proportion also went to those with plaque in both sides, and higher for the left-side ones than that of the right-side subjects.Compared with the plaque-absent CCA group, velocity were lowed in the plaque-present CCA group, but higher in PI and RI. When those with plaque in both sides were concerned, the decrease in PSV and EDV, as well as the rise in PI and RI were most obvious. In comparison with the group with normal IMT, the group of subjects with increase in the IMT indicated decline in PSV and EDV, but increase in PI and RI. Different from the plaque-absent normal IMT group, there was descending in PSV and EDV, along with ascending in PI and PSV/EDV experienced by the plaque-absent thickness-increasing IMT group, within which, those with thickness rise in both sides witnessed less PSV and EDV, in addition to more PI and PSV/EDV.ConcIusion:Most of the subjects with increase in IMT were those with plaque in both sides, and there were more left-side ones than the right-side one in this case. The increase in IMT and the plaques forming were found to be the major factors contributing to the hemodynamic changes.
