Abstract


The Hellenism of he Ptolemaic dynasty is a debatable topic in the historians. Scholars put forward the argument of their own about this topic from the political, economic and cultural aspects. But I don’t fully agree with their views. This article will argue the Hellenism of the Ptolemaic Egypt form the special angle of social life. On the information of social life in this period was mainly obtained from the Cambridge Ancient History, the database of salt tax register of the countryside in Arsinote Nome and Oxyrhynchite Nome, and Memphis under the Ptolemaies and so on.The paper is divided into two parts: introduction and main body. The introduction mainly views of the Hellenistic in Ptolemaic Egypt and the research state of Hellenistic age. The body consists of four chapters. The first chapter mainly introduces the social system in order to elaborate some changes of Ptolemaic Egypt. This charter includes three parts: the political, economic, and the legal system. The second chapter mainly expounds the social class to discuss the different level of people’s status in society. The third part focuses on marriage and family status of the Ptolemaic Egypt. This chapter includes royal marriage, royal family and country people’s family size and family classification. The materials of this chapter are from the database of salt tax register of the countryside in Arsinote Nome and Oxyrhynchite Nome. The fourth chapter describes people’s spiritual life. This article discusses the level of Hellenistic Egypt form the perspective of social life. The unique perspective of social life, to illustrate Ptolemy of Egypt, Greece, come to the Hellenistic period in Egypt of Greek culture grafted on top of the main Greek culture. Therefore we have obtained that Egypt is not assimilates completely with Greece culture. The culture of the Ptolemaic Egypt is transplanting some elements of Greek culture. But the Egypt culture plays a main role in Ptolemaic dynast.
