Abstract


The St.Petersburg is a unique city which is full of conflicts in Russain literature. Many poets and novelists mentioned it in their works and had both good and evil comments on it. Some people praised it and called it“the Window of Europe”, but some people regarded it as a city of“Built on Dead Body”and“A Curse to Russia”with the feeling of hatred and despair. As the“Cradle of Russian Poetry”and the“Capital of Russian Literature”, the St. Petersburg witnessed the most two glorious ages (the Golden Age and the Silver Age) in the history of Russian literature. The city deeply attracted countless writers, poets and painters with its islands and canals, white night and its magnificent scenery. Pushkin ,Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Nikolai Gogol , those names which make Russian proud are all connected with the St. Petersburg .These people pushed Russian literature to the peak and the tradition of Russian literature formed by them of the struggle for the future of motherland and people’s freedom and happiness is inherited by Russian people generation and generation.The thesis is made up of three parts:The first part is about historical memory of the St. Petersburg and mainly narrates the founding of the St. Petersburg and its development and position in the countryThe second part is the memory of literature of the St. Petersburg, which narrates the position of the St. Petersburg in Russian literature and writers’different views and attitudes on the city.The third part is about the different images of the St. Petersburg in the 19th century, which is elaborated by the works of three Russian writers to analyze and conclude in the 19th century.Firstly, it is about the St. Petersburg written by Pushkin, since he is the top treasure and soul of the St.Petersburg. The thesis selected his works“the Memory of Royal Village”《ВспоминаниеоЦарскомСеле》,“Bronze Horseman”《Медныйвсадник》and“Eugene Onegin”《ЕвгенийОнегин》to analyse. Pushkin expressed his love for freedom and love and his faith in light over darkness. Pushkin to the St. Petersburg is what he himself to Russian literature. Pushkin’s love for the St. Petersburg is genuine and ardent. It is hard to find another city like the St. Petersburg which made Pushkin write a lot to praise.Next is about the St.Petersburg written by Tolstoy. He is the psychological analyser and watcher of the city. Take“Crime and Punishment”an example, he showed readers the dark and deathly stillness of slum of St. Petersburg, through which he expressed his sympathy to the poor. The St. Petersburg written by him is dusty, foggy, poor, messy and in chaos.The last is about the St.Petersburg written by Gogol. He is the spokesman of small potato. In his medium-length novel“the Story of St.Petersburg”, he inherited the description of the small potato which was developed by Pushkin. Not only did he describe their miserable life, but also wrote their emotion and hatred of their inner heart. The St. Petersburg written by Gogol is the epitome of social life under the dictatorship of Czar. It is magnificent, colorful and gentle in appearance. However, it is concentrated with all the hideous sides in society and full of hypocrisy, cheat and oppression. As an important literature space, the St. Petersburg is narrated and explained again and again, thus it becomes an arena for the battles of different powers of speeches. It plays a thoughtful role in the course of Russian literature.The thesis applies the method of literature narration. It deeply explores, analyses and narrates the descriptive details of works by careful reading and the help of aesthetic sense. Therefore it sketches the different images of the St. Petersburg in the 19th century in Russia.
