Abstract

Objective:To evaluate the functional outcome and recurrence rate of the giant cell tumor of bone treated with different surgical methods. Methods:From April 1999 to July 2008, 38 patients with giant cell tumor of bone occuring in part of limbs joints, were treated with different surgical methods in Shandong University of TCM Affilliated Hospital Orthopaedics Patients’ Rooms. There were 18cases male and 20cases female with an average age of 34.0 years (range from 16 to 63 years). Jaffe Pathological grade I~II. After the observation of different surgical recurrence rate and the analysis of the function of joint with Enneking functional evaluation system, carry out contrast on whose curative effect. Results:All the 38 cases were followed, with an average of 41.9 months (ranged from 6 months to 111 months). The overall recurrence rate was 15.8%. Curettage with bone transplantation filling recurrence rate was 25%, with methacrylate cement filling recurrence rate was 16.7%. There is no significant statistically difference between the group with bone transplantation and methacrylate cement filling after curettage. The Enneking functional score of bone transplantation filling group, methacrylate cement filling group and prosthetic replacement group were 27.8,28.4and 26.5 respectively. There is no significant statistically difference in the three group. Conclusions:There is no significant difference of recurrence rate between the group with bone transplantation and methacrylate cement filling after curettage. There is no significant difference of joint function between curettage and prosthetic replacement.
