Abstract

This paper proposes a novel developed high-voltage pulse adder based on conventional fully integrated solid-state Marx, which can generate bipolar fast pulses with control on the pulse width, frequency and relaxation time between positive and negative pulses, using only one power supply. The new circuit topology takes advantage of the intensive use of power semiconductor switches and magnetic ring transforms. The process how we design the bipolar pulse adder and the result we test the whole system are also presented in the paper. The paper analyzes the operational principles and merits of conventional Marx and solid state Marx modulator. The proposed topology enables the use of typical half-bridge semiconductor structures to simplify the discharge loop on the basis of Marx. Series-connected transformers using magnetic rings were employed for isolating the charge loop from the high-voltage pulse discharge loop, which simplified the isolation arrangement. The related parameters of the system, including semiconductor switches, energy storage capacitors and series resonant charging circuit, were calculated in detail. On the basis of analyzing switching characteristics and driving characteristics of the main discharge switch MOSFET, the simple driving pulse transformers were implemented to effectively inhibit the EMI caused by the pulse adder arrangement. The experimental results at 21 kHz repetition rate and factors which affect the rising and falling edges of the output pulse are analyzed combining with PSpice circuit simulation. Repetitive operation efficiency of the pulse adder are discussed in the last part. The system is tested and verified reliably for long time working. The bipolar pulse adder operating at 21 kHz repetition rate gives 2 kV bipolar pulses, with 200 ns positive/negative pulse widths,37 ns rise time,50 ns fall time, and 40 ns relaxation time into a 50Ωresistive load. The power efficiency of the pulse adder is approximately 80.35%. Some possible improvements are also proposed in the paper.
