Abstract
|
Chinese character recognition has been an important research area of cognitive science for several decades and many important results have been obtained. Most of previous studies have been focusing on the recognition of standardized Chinese character, but only few has concerned about the recognition of handwritten Chinese character. However, recognizing the handwritten Chinese characters is essential in our daily life. To explore the processing mechanism of handwritten Chinese character can not only deepen our understanding of Chinese character recognition, but help to improve the efficiency of computer algorithm in recognizing handwritten Chinese character. This study includes two experiments. In experiment 1, we selected 5 different kinds of cursive Chinese characters as experimental material to explore the radical and radical combination’s effects on handwritten Chinese character recognition. In experiment 2, we used the regular script characters as experimental material, which corresponded to the characters in experiment 1. In doing this, we can exclude the possibility of incorrect experimental material selection and compare regular script character recognition with handwritten Chinese character recognitionMain conclusions of this study are as following:1. Reaction time needed to recognize handwritten Chinese character increased linearly with the increase of intelligible degree of handwritten Chinese character, and the accuracy of recognition decreased with its increase.2. Radical and radical combination played an important role in handwritten Chinese character recognition. To rotate the handwritten Chinese character can impair the schema of radical organizing and thus making recognition more difficult, but had little effect on recognizing regular script characters.3. Handwritten Chinese character processing consists of a bottom-up processing (prototype matching), and a top-down processing (schema of radical combination).
