Abstract

Rheology is the science that deals with the deformation and flow of materials. The polymer rheology is to study the rheological behaviour of polymeric molecules in the liquated state. The relationship among the behaviour, the molecular structures, the physical and chemical properties, is mostly based on the empirical theories via a great deal of precise laboratory experiments. The Processing Rheology and the Structural Rheology are two main branches on this field. This article focuses on the Structural Rheology, mainly to study the unique polymer-rheological behaviours, the micro-structure, and the relationship between the structures of molecular chains and polymerization, by modeling the flow of polymer to establish the link between the macro rheological behavior and the parameters of micro structure. The research implemented several products of manufactured polypropylene(PP). The structures and rheological behaviours of the samples were characterized by the Capillary Rheometer and the Rotational Rheometer. The relationship between the structure of PP and its rheological behaviours was concluded via a great amount of rheological experiments and along with the analysis of experimental data by the rheological models and the empirical formulas. This method could be applied in the qualitative research to analyze the molecular mass and to identify the mass distribution, and also in the quantitative measurement by adjusting the parameters, to provide an experimental basis for the industrial production of PP and the products quality analysis. In the research, Polypropylene/Attapulgite (ATP) Nanocomposite was prepared, by the method of Melt blending, for the further analysis of the relationship between the structure of the nanocomposite and its rheological behaviour, which was investigated as the steady flow and dynamic rheology behaviours.By characterizing the properties and the structures of the Polypropylene/Attapulgite Nanocomposite, it has been evident that the filler is evenly distributed in PP at nanoscale, whereas with little amount of aggregates. The crystal of PP would not be modified by filling of the ATP, and the appropriate amount of filler could enhance the tensile strength of PP. The test on the rheological behaviour demonstrated that the increasing density of the filler would result in the raise of both storage moduli and loss moduli. According to the data, the nanocomposite is of Pseudoplastic Fluid, having strong effects of the Shear Thinning behavior and of the yield stress, whose rheological behaviour is evidently determined by the shear rate, the experimental temperature and the density of ATP. The X-ray diffraction profiles showed that ATP is different from other layered clay nanocomposites, without intercalated structure in the PP matrix.
