Abstract


Byron is undoubtedly the England and even Europe’s greatest Romantic poet. Byron traveled abroad to visit the East from 1809 to 1811. He began to write "Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage" and other poems on the road, and brewed the future of Oriental story poems. In February 1812, the Chapter 1,2 of "Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage" came out, which caused a sensation in literary circles. "The Giaour ", "The Bride of Abydos ", "The Corsair ", "Lara", " The Siege Of Corinth", "Parisina", etc.6 epics, are totally known as " Oriental Tales ", which were wrote during the period from 1813 to 1815.Byron left England in 1816, during the period living abroad, He had written the chapter 3,4 of "Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage", the story poem "The Prisoner of Chillon ", "Prometheus", the tragedy "Manfred", and unfinished masterpiece, "Don Juan" (1818-1823).Byron’s poetry is the study object in this essay, and I’ll try to search for Oriental imagination world and self-constructed myth in the poetry of Byron. Romantic were good at self-discovery, self-expression. Regardless of Byronic hero or a tyrant, slave, mysterious women, are the props which Byron used for self-Byron myth or self-construction. It has concern with the Romantic thoughts about pursuit of freedom and personal liberation.This essay is divided in to "introduction", "body" and " conclusion ".Introduction introduces the present study about Byron’s poetry, both in theory and in practice, both at home and abroad is also lack of a special study about Oriental imagination and self-construction in Byron’s poetry. Second, it will point out the significance of this thesis, and define the relevant concepts in this essay.The body includes three chapters.The first chapter will pursue the imagination of oriental world mainly through text reading and analysis. It will firstly analyze the oriental cultural context in Byron’s poetry, which includes the "Eastern Revival" and the oriental background about romantic, "Easternization" of the West; Then extract and summarize the characters of orient people, which is divided into three types:the orient women, rulers and enslaved persons, rebels and homeless persons. Thirdly, chapter one will analyze the implication behind these figures; Finally, It will discuss Byron’s attitude to religion, analyse the inevitable religious spirit and the Greek consciousness in Byron’s poetry.The second chapter will discuss the construction of self-mythology in Byron’s poetry. The poet was constructing a mythology about himself through traveling and imagining the Orient, shaping the Oriental image. His poetry has also been retained because of himself. This chapter is divided into two sections:Section one, " Poet self-image construction in Oriental imagination"; Section two, "the myth of self-poet."On the basis of these two chapters, the three chapter will focus on the origin of Byron and the Orient, also summary the aesthetic significance of Oriental imagination and the construction of self-mythology in Byron’s poetry. This essay will use Archetypal Criticism and Psychoanalytic Theory, from the social, psychological and other aspects of life, tracing the relation between Byron and Oriental. It will Point out that, in the process of self-construction, Byron inevitably had seen the Orient through the lens of West. Cultural misunderstanding exists, analyze it. Hope the above can make reader form a clearer understanding about the aesthetic significance of this theme:not only because of its unique artistic charm having deeply Impacted the romantic literature, but also on the influence over other European arts, it has a positive impact on the enhancement of the aesthetic value about the Western Romanticism.The conclusion is the summary and Sublimation of the above, consider that it is inevitable for western romantic which were represented by Byron to misread the culture of the Orient. And it will propose that, the Orient should take a more positive attitude in culture to deal with the West’s misreading, and we should focus more attention on the dialogue awareness in the process of image building when we do the Image Studies.
