Abstract


This thesis aims at a further and comprehensive research on the novel My Travel Attached to Ding Yi by Shi Tiesheng through the analysis of its textual theme and formation and its aesthetic images.The introduction summarizes the status quo of the researches about this novel in the academic circles. The first of this thesis is a multi-dimensional probe into its textual theme. Based on the description of the sufferings of Ding Yi, the author ponders the distress and anxiety of existence and explores the meaning of life, and the predicament of life-and-death and suicide. The novel is pervaded by an obvious religious atmosphere. Based on what the“walking ghost”sees, hears, and feels, Shi Tiesheng explains his original views on religion and science from the angle of philosophy. This is a typical novel exploring the essence of love, revealing the author’s unique outlooks on love and sex. Only through the sharp collision of body and soul can life burst forth its rays of light. Only the perfect blend of love and sex can lead to pure love. Each individual comes to the world lonely and sex acts as a king of language to dispel the shields between souls.The second part of the thesis focuses on the research about the aesthetic images in the novel. Many aesthetic images are presented in this novel as well as in the author’s former works. The“walking ghost”is the most particular image in My Travel Attached to Ding Yi. One of the most outstanding features of the novel is that the image of the“walking ghost”performs as the novel’s perspective and voice of narration. This aesthetic image is the result of the author’s long-term reflection of life-and-death, soul and solitude, which shows his persistent exploration of immortality. As the author suffered a lot in his life,“dreams”serve as his best spiritual comfort and writing materials. All that cannot be obtained in reality can be realized in the dream, which is the projection of reality and illusion. Therefore,“dreams”are one of the most important images created by the author. Shi Tiesheng often views the world from the perspectives of innocent children and weather-beaten old men. Thus there are also the images of“children”and“old men”in his novels, which are the anchor of his hope and recollection.The third part is the study of the novel’s textual formation. There are quite a lot of innovations of the textual formation in this novel. In the narration of the novel, the image of“walking ghost”is emphasized as the unique perspective of narration. The flexibility of the novel’s perspective is created by the interchange of inter-focusing, outer-focusing and non-focusing perspectives. The use of the writing pattern of dream recall and mosaicism enhances the novel’s formal meaning to a great extent. The emphasized bold key words embody profound realistic reflection. The logic questioning pattern is a show of a manifestation of the author’s exhausting deliberation. Mixed and playful language constitutes the diverse narrative style of the novel.The author’s experiment in the novel’s formation greatly widens its reading space and brings a new reading experience. In spite of all these innovations in its formation, there are still some drawbacks in the novel such as too much repetition of the content, the arrangement of its pot and figures affected by the philosophical consideration of life, the simplicity of the plot, and the contentious reception of the novels.Through the analysis of the innovations of the textual formation of Shi Tiesheng’s novel My Travel Attached to Ding Yi, this thesis explores the author’s literary features, profound thought and aesthetics, which puts forward a new perspective and a unique way of its study.
