Abstract

Malignant pleural effusion(MPE)is one of common complications in advanced cancer, due to progression or recurrence of other disease, and occasionally turns up as the first clinical manifestation, which can impact patients’survival and quality of life. surgery and radiotherapy couldn’t be applied in the treatment of MPE,even chemotherapy、immunological medication,or the combination of western and Chinese medicine can’t treat it effectively. Pleural effusion can give rise to respiratory and circulation in dysfunction or failure, repeatedly liquid pumping can lead to the loss of protein and accelerate the death, how to treatment MPE effectively is always one of the difficulties. There are lots of reported treatments for MPE at home and abroad, without any good effects, while chemotherapy drugs have side effects, and not suitable for elderly patients.TCM treatment has its own advantages for the treatment of the disease. There are many medical literature about the treatment of traditional Chinese medicine about MPE,it can reduce the toxicity of chemotherapy、chemotherapy improved completion rate、alleviate symptoms、improve quality of life. In this study , standard clinical symptom score scale was used before and after treatment to score margin of quantitative data, class information and Evaluation of the life quality improvement were done by Ridit analysis. With the purpose of Chinese attenuated to improve efficiency, and synergies with the modern medicine perspective, the study was carried out in oncology department of Guang’ An Men Hospital, from September 2006 to 2008 March of the 51 with treatment of patients with MPE (26 patients in the treatment group, and 25 patients in control group) , prospective clinical intervention was applied, with a view to further enhance the Chinese medicine treatment of MPE, which provided clinical support for the treatment of Xiaoshui decoctiojn with or without combination of DDP in the treatment of malignant pleural effusionThe results shows that:①baseline information before treatment comparison showed:two groups in age、gender、MPE of the illness、Chinese medicine syndrome、KPS score areas showed no significant difference (P>0.05) ②effect of the recent assessment, the treatment group and the control group’s efficiency(CR + PR) were 72.0% and 58.3% respectively , the statistical analysis , no significant difference(P=0.433).③results of life quality, two clinical benefit rate (increase + stable) were 96.0% and 75.0%,the statistical analysis, there are significant differences(P=0.013).④clinical symptoms improvement, the treatment group before and after the symptom score margin to 7.7±1.4:the control group before and after the symptom score margin to 6.4±1.4,between the two groups, there are significant differences (P<0.05).⑤adverse reactions, There were no kidney toxicity .According to the results,it is believed that , although the Xiaoshui decotion, combined with DDP shows a little improvement in the treatment of MPE(P>0.05), for improvement of life quality about clinical symptoms, it does have great significance, and should be further promoted
