Objective To understand the relationship between infant feeding, complementary feeding conditions, the incidence of anemia and the development of physical and mental of 0 to 12-month-old infant in HeFei, this prospective observation explores the impact on their growth and development by early infant feeding practices and nutrition-related behavior. It will provides the basis intervention for this phase and provide more comprehensive nutritional guidance for parents and caregivers of infants in future.Method According to the information management features and the actual situation of maternal and child health in Hefei, we selected health-care institutions for women and children for the study site. The subjects include the infants from 0 to 12 months. After obtaining informed consent to establish prospective observational cohort, the final data collection was 474 subjects. According to infancy "421" health program set up observation points, the survey collected information of birth outcome, demographic characteristics of parents, family background by questionnaires. On the one hand, investing feeding and complementary feeding conditions of infant which includes time and type of complementary feeding ; the other hand, recording Anthropometry of baby physical development status from baby care manual records, which includs body weight (kg),length (cm) and head circumference (cm) and chest circumference (cm), and using Z-score evaluating the differences of their physical development and nutritional status; third, disease status of subjects, such as the occurrence of "Four Disease" which includes diarrhea, rickets, anemia , pneumonia and the occurrence of upper respiratory infections including colds, coughs, bronchitis, etc.Fourth, Gesell Development Diagnosis Scale(GDDS) is adopted to investigate of intellectual development by calculating the development quotient. Results The study shows that weight 10.36±1.10 kg, length 76.72±2.92 cm, head circumference 46.19±1.21 cm, chest circumference 46.37±1.40 cm when they are 12 month-old. Infant weight gain is 6.95±1.01kg, height growth is 26.43±2.83cm within 12 months.Within 4 months of age, feeding patterns included exclusively breastfeeding (EBF),combined breastfeeding(CF)and artificial feeding(AF). Breast- feeding (BF)included EBF and CF.The case of exclusively breast-feeding is 259,combined breastfeeding is 158, artificial feeding is 57, the rates were 54.6%、33.3% and 12.1%. Different feeding patterns cause various incidence of anemia. The incidence of anemia of artificial feeding is 8.7%, the incidence of anemia of combined breastfeeding is 11.6% and the incidence of anemia of exclusively breastfeeding is 21.9%. There were statistically significant differences among the three groups(P=0.012). Pairwise comparison shows that exclusive breastfeeding group were higher than the other two groups, the difference was significant (P<0.01).Adding complementary food is from 4.2±0.8months.The order of adding time is eggs 4.4±1.1 months, cereals 4.5±1.1 months, fruits 4.8±1.7 months , vegetables 5.1±2.2 months, meat 6.0±3.0 months.Rate of adding eggs is 68.3% of 4-month-old baby which is highest in various kinds of food supplement. Rate of adding cereals is 64.8%.It is secondly.Five areas of neuropsychological were normal and their developmental level were almostly the same, There was not significant difference between boys and girls.Conclusion1.Growth and development of infant in Shushan of Hefei is better than the standard of weight and height from "Survey of National Nutrition and Health in 2002". 2.Three kinds of feeding patterns are exclusively breastfeeding, combined breastfeeding and artificial feeding, the rate of them are 54.6%、33.3% and 12.1%.Rate of combined breastfeeding and artificial feeding have increased, but exclusive breastfeeding rate has dropped. Simply compare of complementary feeding time shows that impact of infant’s weight and length is not obvious. But comparetion in concrete type of complementary food, such as cereals, fruits, vegetables and meat, different time of two complementary feeding groups is not same.Difference is significant (P<0.05). Therefore, Health agency should guide on complementary feeding deeply and change the false of feeding ideas.3.There may be clearly relationship between time and type of feeding and complementary of infant and incidence of his disease and physical development. To promote scientific and rational feeding babies and improve the level of care infants by parents and caregivers, pediatric health should be concerned about the baby’s nutritional balance and timely scientific intervention.Parents and caregivers of infants should insistent breastfeeding, and enhance knowledge of feeding.Meanwhile, pediatric health should increase animalistic food and diversity guidance in big baby.
