Abstract


The image of the mouse is depicted frequently in children’s literature, specifically that is, literature that is created with children as the intended readers. Reflecting the fact that children’s literature is quite different from adult’s literature, the mouse image appears much more commonly in children’s literature and its representations are much more diverse.In children’s literature, mice can be portrayed on the one hand as sly and greedy, while on the other hand they might be represented as enthusiastic, intelligent, and kind. In particular, they often serve as the hero or heroine as they redeem others or themselves in these stories. They are vastly different from mice we have come to know in our daily lives or the mice introduced in adults’literature, and they arouse very different feelings and interests in the young reader. Therefore, the systematic cleaning and polishing of the mouse’s images in children’s literature is necessary as well as important. This research will present a new perspective and understanding into the humane spirit and esthetic characteristic of children’s literature .In this thesis a mumber of classic books will be discussed in terms of their narratives and the images of the mouse in these books will be analyzed from the perspective of their esthetic characteristics, so that the real esthetic potential of children’s literature will be reveales and the writer’s particularly captivating approach to creating literature for children can be fully appreciated. It is perhaps a bit of a courageous act to choose to treat the common mouse as the subject of study in children’s literature. The thesis also takes a kind of creative approach to study this charming little animal in order to explore its special esthetic spirit as well as the writers’imaginative and meticulous concerns for childhood and the child reader.
