Abstract


Xu Yin, also called Zhao Meng, is a well-known writer in late Tang Dynasty. He has great achievements in poems, composing, poetry rules, and particularly in composing. Xu Yin occupies an important space in the five generations’ literature garden of late Tang. Especially in the development of literary history of Fujian, Xu Yin’s prominent position can not be neglected. However, academic researches on Xu Yin are relatively lagging behind and scattered, which are neither sufficient nor comprehensive. This paper strives to resolve a great deal of issues such as Xu Yin’s name and birth, his pass of the imperial examinations, the visit of Liang, his retirement and passing away and so forth, in a bid to sketch the outline of his complete life. Xu Yin creates a large amount of works and there are many different popular versions. However, the recorded contents of different versions are varied. This paper makes a comparison of various versions and distinguishes the authenticity of his works and finally roughly confirms the quantity of his works and the table of contents. Xu Yin’s creation of rhapsody is considered to be the remarkable representative of late Tang Dynasty. This paper makes a detailed classification of the existing 47 rhapsodies and preliminarily analyses their overall artistic characteristics. There are 269 pieces of poetry existing created by Xu Yin now and the paper sorts out carefully, confirming the special contributions of Xu Yin in the prosperity of poetry circles of Five Dynasties in Fujian.
