Abstract

From the perspective of social modernization, this thesis studies the experience and lessons in the socio-economic transformation of Qingdao Suburban fishing villages—Damaidao, Wangjiamaidao, Xujiamaidao and Shandongtou, and reviews Qingdao’s modernization drive and urbanization process so as to provide some experience for the same kind of areas on their road to modernization. In so doing, the author provides a valuable example for the hotly-discussed issues such as the road and way of modernization.From liberation up to now, the suburban fishing villages of Qingdao have not opened their arms subconsciously to welcome modernization and modern civilization in the wave of reform and opening-up and urbanization in spite of their geographical advantages. Instead, these villages have always fallen behind the times, failing to rationally merge into the urban social life or retain their own social and cultural independence and features. For more than 50 years, they have been isolated as marginal regions and undeveloped corners of society, and worse still, severed from the local administrative division all of a sudden.This thesis analyses the development, decline and death of these Qingdao suburban fishing villages.In temporal order, this thesis focuses on several economic and social stages. Geographically, it contrasts Qingdao’s Laoshan District, Chengyang District and other non-fishing villages in terms of their foreign investment and joint venture enterprises, town and township enterprise construction, opening-up and industrial updating, village and town construction, the use of land, cultural development, residents’ education and the improvement of their cultural qualities, as well as employment. It objectively describes the historical facts of their economic and social transformation and ultimate failure.The main reason for the failure of those suburban fishing villages’ social and economic transformation is the failure of the municipal policy of administrative division, which classified these villages into rural areas lacking in social devotion and management.The transformation of Qingdao suburban fishing villages is an individual case with some coincidence, but it is also common and representative. From this we can learn that in choosing the road of development for suburban areas we should not only value GDP or economic benefit; instead, we should give priority to the improvement of human qualities, the long-term peace and stability of the city, the diversity of culture. Comprehensive measures should be taken to effect social transformation and improve the life quality and cultural progress of the residents so as to achieve the comprehensive goal of economic development, social transformation and the all-round improvement of national quality.Many Chinese coastal cities have developed from old fishing villages. As a result, those newly disappeared suburban fishing villages and their rise and fall are fossils of history, through which we can study the success and failure of their social development and review the experience and lessons of urbanization. Moreover, China has over 100 million fishermen and many villages also face the opportunities and challenges of urbanization. The analysis in this thesis is meant to serve as a guide for their urbanization and a unique perspective for the road and way of their modernization which is under hot academic discussion.
